A New Offering from My Travels in Taiwan, Japan, and Korea

Overview

I travel to Taiwan, Japan, and Korea several times each year and spend time with small local calligraphy studios and stamp makers.

• Most do not sell online.
• Many do not speak English.
• Their work rarely leaves their city.
  

From these visits, I bring back a small number of seals and calligraphy pieces to share with those who value authentic objects with real cultural origin.

This offering is called the Good Characters Calligraphy and Seal Journey.

How It Works

You join by pre-paying $250.

During my travels, I personally select items for you from the artisans I encounter.

Most participations result in two or three seals or related items, and sometimes more, depending on what is discovered and what feels right to bring back.

In some cases, I may also include calligraphy written by local masters, such as a name or chosen characters.

I only bring back pieces that genuinely impress me.

Expanded Sourcing

Each participation is $250.

If you would like me to source a larger group of items on your behalf, you are welcome to join multiple times. Each additional participation expands the scope of what I may select for you during the journeys.

Selections remain entirely by my judgment and what is found in place. Multiple participations increase sourcing scope but do not guarantee a specific number or type of items.

What Makes This Different

This is not ordering from a catalog.
These are objects discovered in place.

Nature of Items

Items may include carved seals, blank seals, seal stones, or calligraphy pieces selected in place. Materials, carving styles, and formats vary by artisan and region.

Selections are not custom commissions and are not specified in advance.

Handmade Character

These pieces are handmade in small studios and may show natural variation, tool marks, or minor irregularities consistent with traditional craft. This is part of their authenticity.

Timing and Delivery

After you join, you will receive an acknowledgment from Good Characters together with an engraved wooden bookmark created in my studio.

Your selected items will be delivered after my sourcing journeys are completed. Because this work depends on travel, artisan availability, and what is discovered in place, fulfillment commonly occurs within 3–6 months after joining.

This offering is intentionally slow. It is not quick or scheduled delivery. The time between joining and receiving is part of the journey itself.

Provenance

Each item includes a short note describing:

• where it was found
• the artisan or studio
• the local context

Many of these makers have no international presence, so what you receive will likely be something you would not encounter otherwise.

Trust and Selection

This offering depends on trust in my judgment and taste.

You are allowing me to choose something on your behalf from the places I visit.

If that feels comfortable to you, I believe you will appreciate what arrives.

You may share preferences in the message box at checkout. I will keep them in mind, though specific items cannot be guaranteed.

This is not a custom commission.

It is a shared journey.

You are participating in the sourcing process itself.

Shipping

Shipping is included worldwide.

Items are sourced during my travels and shipped from my studio after the journeys are completed. Delivery times vary by destination.

Items are sourced legally and carried personally. Availability may vary due to local regulations or travel conditions.

Refunds

Because sourcing begins upon joining and selections are made during travel, participations are non-refundable once travel has begun.

Analogy

Tea merchants travel to origin regions to select teas in person.

In a similar way, I source seals and calligraphy directly from the places and makers themselves.
