What Is Banksy’s Chinese Name

A name does not have to exist in only one form

Banksy may or may not have been identified recently.

But there is another question that almost no one is asking.

What is Banksy in Chinese.

In Chinese, “Banksy” is usually written in one of two standard ways. They are fine. They sound close. They do not cause problems.

But they are also safe. And a little boring.

Chinese does not work like English. Because of homophones, the same sound can be written in hundreds or even thousands of ways. Each one carries a different meaning. Some are good. Some are bad. Some are funny. Some are strange.

So the name “Banksy” is not just one name in Chinese. It is a field of possibilities.

One version I thought of is 笨死 (ben si).

It literally means “stupid to death.” In everyday language, it means “ridiculously stupid.”

Most people would never choose a name like that.

But I can imagine Banksy using it on purpose.

Not because it sounds nice, but because it says something.

That is the difference between translation and naming.

Translation tries to be correct.

Naming makes a statement.

I once wrote a short note to Banksy about this idea. I sent it to Pest Control.

I am considering putting together a small book that explores many of these possibilities. The idea is simple. A name does not have to exist in only one form. It can exist across a whole spectrum of meanings.

Banksy’s work already plays with identity, authorship, and perception. This feels like a natural extension of that idea into language.
