One of the best ways to master Chinese calligraphy is to learn from the best. Good Characters Calligraphy Practice Paper Set includes eight pages of principal writing examples from four of the best calligraphers in Chinese history. From left to right:

All the names are transliterated according to the traditional Chinese way, family name preceding the given name. Thus Ouyang Xun's family name is Ouyang; given name Xun. Wang Xi Zhi's family name is Wang and given, or first, name is Xi Zhi.

Ouyang Xun Wang Xi Zhi Yan Zhen Qing Liu Gong Quan
557-641 AD 321-379 AD 709-785 AD 778-865 AD
His life spanned three dynasties: South Dynasty, Sui Dynasty, and Tang Dynasty. His calligraphy is known for its strict, rigorous, vivid, and vigorous style. The most famous calligrapher in Chinese history. Almost all calligraphers after him have more or less learned his calligraphy. His calligraphy is vigorous and elegant. Respected as the greatest calligrapher after Wang Xi Zhi, Yan is known for the stability, power, and tremendous momentum in his calligraphy. Liu's calligraphy was influenced by both Wang Xi Zhi and Yan Zhen Qing, yet he formed his own style. His calligraphy is well structured, strong, vigorous, solid, simple, and elegant.

My old calligraphy teacher, Mr. Bai, who was born in Northeast China and mastered Chinese calligraphy in the traditional way by rigorously practicing at least four hours a day, instructed his students to start by learning from Yan Zhen Qing's and Liu Gong Quan's calligraphy examples. Yang's writing is bold and stable. Liu's writing is thin and strong. Mastering these two fundamental styles allows one to form his or her own unique style.
