My old calligraphy teacher, Mr. Bai, who was born in Northeast China and mastered Chinese calligraphy in the traditional way by rigorously practicing at least four hours a day, instructed his students to start by learning from Yan Zhen Qing's and Liu Gong Quan's calligraphy examples. Yang's writing is bold and stable. Liu's writing is thin and strong. Mastering these two fundamental styles allows one to form his or her own unique style.
