This black ink stick is made from pine soot, powdered carbon of burnt pine, and a binding agent. Pine soot is black and light. It is made specifically for calligraphy and handwriting, but not painting. When its end is dipped in the water well of an ink stone and rubbed over the stone's level surface, carbon particles fall off and dissolve in the water to produce ink.
